Don’t start relationships based on physical appearance

The latest episode of the popular YouTube show Asetena Pa, hosted by Akoto Mansa, tackled one of the most complex topics: the state of modern relationships and the core values essential for a successful marriage.
The show featured PV Jantuah Boateng Dadson, a well-regarded marriage counselor and life coach, who delved into some of the underlying issues he believes are impacting relationships today. His insights shed light on the challenges young couples face and provided guidance for those hoping to build enduring partnerships.
As the conversation unfolded, Mr. Dadson voiced his concerns about what he sees as a superficial approach in today’s dating culture. “A lot of men start relationships with women based on physical attraction they feel in casual encounters,” he explained.
To him, this trend — one driven by instant gratification and appearance-based attraction — is problematic for both men and women and contributes to the instability plaguing many relationships. “Initiating connections purely from physical attraction is not sustainable for building deep, meaningful bonds,” he warned, stressing that these interactions often lead to relationships lacking in emotional depth and resilience.
One of the highlights of the discussion was Mr. Dadson’s perspective on the qualities necessary for a man to be ready for marriage. He emphasized the importance of emotional maturity, clarifying that maturity isn’t about age but rather wisdom and a sense of responsibility.
“Marriage requires a person with depth of character, someone who is prepared to shoulder the responsibilities that come with it,” he said, noting that superficial connections fail to prepare individuals for the long-term commitment marriage demands.
In addressing the purpose of marriage, Mr. Dadson spoke on companionship as the primary reason for partnership, rather than solely having children. “Marriage is first and foremost about companionship,” he shared. He explained that this perspective not only strengthens the bond between spouses but also eases the pressure couples often feel to conform to societal expectations. His view highlighted a broader, more inclusive definition of marriage, one that recognizes and validates childless couples as equally fulfilled and complete.
