Europe feels cheaper than Accra
Germany-based Ghanaian socialite and singer Joyce Dzidzor Mensah has once again sparked an important conversation, this time about the high cost of living in Accra.
In a video shared on Facebook, she compared life in Ghana’s capital to Europe, highlighting the stark contrasts in affordability, especially for basic necessities like food and rent.
“I just don’t understand how a developing country like Ghana has such expensive living costs,” Joyce expressed with palpable frustration in her voice.
“In Europe, you can walk into a supermarket, and with a reasonable budget, you can fill your basket. But here in Accra, it’s shocking how much people have to pay for basic groceries.”
Her concerns resonate with many Ghanaians, particularly those living in urban centers, who often grapple with the rising cost of food, rent, and transportation.
Joyce noted that utility bills in Europe might be higher, but the discrepancy in living expenses between a developed and a developing country remains hard to justify.
Adding to her critique, Joyce raised an alarming issue about some farming practices in Ghana. She accused certain farmers of using unapproved chemicals to speed up the growth of their crops, which enables them to offer cheaper prices in the competitive market.
However, the darker side of this practice is the health risks associated with consuming these chemically treated crops.
“What’s even sadder,” Joyce noted, “is that these same farmers don’t eat the crops they sell. They keep the organic, safer produce for their families while selling the chemical-treated ones to unsuspecting consumers. It’s unfair and dangerous.”
