I grew up with no affection
Ghanaian rapper and social media figure Showboy has peeled back the curtains on his most painful truths, a life shaped by rejection, isolation, and survival against the odds.
Raised by his grandmother after his parents separated, he says he grew up without guidance, affection, or the emotional support every child needs.
“I grew up with no parental control,” he recalled in an interview on 3Music TV monitored by MyNewsGh. “If you see me going crazy, it’s because I ain’t got no one to tell me, ‘Hey, stop it.’ It’s not my fault.”
Despite maintaining contact with his mother, who provided financial support from the U.S. Showboy said what he truly missed was love.
“It’s not about the material things. It’s about the affection. I grew up with no affection. So I’m very savage.”
His struggles haunted his adulthood, especially during his imprisonment in America. At his lowest moments, he admits he battled suicidal thoughts.
“I was in a cage, all alone… I didn’t want to live,” he said, describing the brutal trauma of solitary confinement and mental medication.
Yet, in the midst of despair, he points to one constant source of love: his grandmother. “That’s my best friend,” he shared with a small smile.
Now focused on music and healing, he says his purpose is bigger than fame; “Anytime you feel like doing crazy things to yourself, just go to the studio. Music saved my life.”
