I had to go back home – Davido on how Nigeria revived his career
For Davido, success has always been tied to his roots. While speaking on the Drink Champs podcast, the Nigerian superstar shared how leaving Nigeria to pursue a major-label deal in the U.S. nearly cost him his sound, his confidence, and his career momentum.
“When I got my deal, they put me in studios with different producers, but I wasn’t feeling it,” he admitted. “I’m used to being in Nigeria, in a room, sweating, no AC, just me, my mic, my people throwing ideas around. That’s when the fire comes out.”
The structured and calculated approach of the major-label system in the U.S. was a stark contrast to the raw, energetic process he was used to. Despite having access to top-tier producers and resources, he found himself creatively stuck.
“I woke up one day, got mad, and said, ‘I need to go home,’” Davido said. He hopped on a plane, returned to Nigeria, and immediately felt a shift. “In two weeks, I recorded If. That was it. That was the song that changed everything.”
By reconnecting with his original producers and embracing the Nigerian sound, he reignited his career and proved that authenticity was his biggest asset.
“The label wasn’t sure about it at first,” he recalled. “They were like, ‘How’s this going to get on the radio?’ But I told them, ‘It’s going to work.’ And it did.”
