If my wife slaps my mother, I’ll ask why before taking action – Daniel Kelly
Marriage is often idealized as a bond built on love, trust, and commitment, but what happens when extreme situations test these foundations?
Relationship coach Daniel Kelly sparked a thought-provoking discussion on The Toast show on GHOne, where he emphasized that love in marriage should not be conditional.
His argument? Even if a spouse slaps their in-law, the first reaction should be to understand the reason, not to immediately dissolve the marriage.
“When I say ‘I love you,’ I mean that the things I see, the things I’m going to discover, I’m sticking with you to make it work,” Kelly stated.
The media personality hosting the discussion, surprised by his stance, interjected: “So I should divorce you because you slapped my mother?”
Kelly doubled down on his perspective: “If I slap your mother, are you leaving me? When it comes to marriage, why should everything be so conditional?”
He explained that in a marriage, conflict resolution should always be the priority. “If my wife slaps my mother, I am going to ask why. I’ll find out what led to it because simply sending her out doesn’t mean the next wife won’t do the same or worse.”
The discussion took an interesting turn when the host posed another question: “What if your mother slaps your wife? What should you do?”
Kelly responded firmly: “Then what, should I send my mother away? Your mother will go to your husband’s house, no? There’s a thing called conflict resolution.”
He emphasized that rather than resorting to drastic measures, couples should seek to understand the root cause of conflicts.
“You don’t just kick your wife out. If you don’t address the issue, what guarantees that the next wife won’t do worse, maybe even kill your mother?”
