Love doesn’t pay bills – Woman explains why men must be open about income

A Nigerian woman has spoken openly about dating experiences that raised red flags for her, particularly when men avoid discussing their finances.

“So I saw this guy. He came to my DM and said, ‘Hope you are ready for marriage this year.’ He wanted to come to Abuja to meet my family.

I asked him what he does. He said real estate and runs his own company. Then I asked how much he makes,” she said.

The man hesitated to reveal his income, saying, “The woman is not supposed to know how much a man earns.” She viewed this as a serious warning.

“I’m like, okay. That’s a red flag. Are you serious? I’m not supposed to know how much my husband-to-be makes?”

She added that understanding a man’s financial capacity is essential, not for greed, but to assess readiness for family life.

“If I’m going to marry someone, I need to know if he’s capable of raising a family. That’s why I asked. Love alone doesn’t pay bills.”
