Nobody is above the law
Controversial Nigerian preacher, Oba Solomon, has weighed in on the arrest of outspoken social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), urging the public to exercise patience and await official clarification from the authorities.
“I cannot tell the government to release VDM until I know his offence. Nobody is above the law,” Oba Solomon stated, cautioning against jumping to conclusions.
“Everybody should calm down and wait till Monday when the EFCC will release the official statement on why he was arrested. If they fail to do that, we can then swear for them.”
VDM was picked up on May 2, 2025, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja, sparking widespread concern across the country.
The arrest reportedly occurred shortly after he visited a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) branch to address issues regarding unauthorized withdrawals from his mother’s account.
According to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, the activist was approached by unidentified men in black uniforms outside the bank, who allegedly beat him, blindfolded him, and took him away without laying any formal charges.
In a brief statement, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed VDM’s detention. “We have some petitions against him that we are working on. He has some issues with us,” he said, but provided no further detail.
The arrest has since triggered a wave of criticism both online and offline, with many questioning the manner in which the EFCC handled the situation.
Celebrities, including award-winning artist Davido, have taken to social media to express support. “FREE MY GUY,” Davido wrote, adding that the show of solidarity was heartwarming.
