People who fight E-levy have not travel before – Diana Asamoah

Award winning Ghanaian Gospel Singer and Evangelist, Diana Asamoah  has waded into ongoing conversation about the government proposed electronic transaction levy, e-levy.

According to her, persons who are against the tax which seeks to impose some 1.75% on mobile money transactions above ₵100 have not travelled to Europe and other part of the world before.

Diana Asamoah made the assertion in an interview with Ghanaian blogger Zionfelix sighted by GhanaPlus.com.

She explained the E-Levy if implemented will help bring development to the country and create job opportunities for people.

“If you go to a country like Italy, the toll is automatic. You will not see anyone there collecting tolls, but you are compelled to pay. You pay 10 Euro on your going and the same on your return. Everything is taxed”.

“In Ghana, it is because some people have not travelled before that is why they speak against taxpaying and E-levy. If we were to explain the importance and the need to pay the E-Levy, it would bring great developments. People will get jobs to do, and Ghana would have been so beautiful,” she noted.

The Finance Minister who presented the budget to Parliament on Wednesday, November 17 said the levy will help widen the tax net and rope in the informal sector into the country tax system.

“After considerable deliberations, the government has decided to place a levy on all electronic transactions to widen the tax net and rope in the informal sector. This shall be known as the “Electronic Transaction Levy or E-Levy”, Mr Ofori-Atta told Parliament.

However, Ghanaians have rejected the levy on the basis it will worsen the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian.
