Portable pays fine, avoids jail over 2022 assault case

Singer Portable has avoided a three-month prison sentence by opting to pay a ₦30,000 fine in connection with a 2022 assault case.
The street-hop star, whose legal woes have often paralleled his rise in fame, was sentenced by the Ifo Magistrate Court in Ogun State after being found guilty of conspiracy to assault and unlawful assault.
The charges stemmed from a physical altercation involving Portable and others in the Okeosa, Ilogbo area on November 18, 2022.
According to Inspector Olumide Awoleke, Portable and his associates—who remain at large—were accused of beating one Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi. The court also received reports of stolen studio equipment, though it did not convict him on the theft charges.
The singer, first arraigned in April 2023, missed several court appearances, prompting his remand into custody last week.
When brought back before Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo on Tuesday, he opted to pay the fine instead of serving the sentence: ₦10,000 for the conspiracy charge and ₦20,000 for assault.
Portable’s brush with the law has once again sparked conversations about fame, responsibility, and the thin line entertainers often walk in the public eye.
