Rev. Abel Damina challenges modern church practices, calls seed sowing unbiblical

In an insightful conversation on the Honest Brunch podcast, hosted by Nedu Wazobia, Rev. Abel Damina, the senior pastor of Power Chapel, took a bold stand against what he perceives as exploitative practices within modern Christianity.

Known for his unapologetic critique of doctrines he believes manipulate the faithful, Rev. Damina used this platform to challenge the commonly accepted practices of seed sowing and tithing, calling out many contemporary pastors for distorting the true essence of the gospel.

Damina’s reputation as a strong voice against financial manipulation in the church precedes him. He is widely known for opposing doctrines that he believes use the vulnerability of Christians to generate personal wealth for pastors.

In this latest interview, his message was clear: certain teachings in today’s churches, particularly around seed sowing, are not rooted in biblical principles and have no place in genuine Christian practice.

“Seed sowing is not a biblical principle,” Rev. Damina emphasized during his appearance. “Many pastors have hijacked this concept, using it to manipulate vulnerable congregants into giving money. The gospel is about salvation, not about exploiting people for financial gain.”

For Rev. Damina, the core of the gospel is the message of Christ, which he feels has been overshadowed by the heavy focus on financial contributions from churchgoers.

He expressed concern that many Christians are being taught to give money under the guise of spiritual benefit, with promises of prosperity or divine favour in return.

“The true meaning of seed sowing lies in the Word of God itself,” he explained. “It is about living the gospel in your daily life, not about constantly opening your wallet to pastors who have no real spiritual guidance to offer.”

Damina didn’t hold back when he addressed the financial motivations of some pastors. According to him, many preachers rely on practices like seed sowing and tithing to maintain their relevance and financial stability, even if it means distorting the gospel.

“These pastors know that the more they can make people believe that they need to give, the more they will continue to fill their pockets,” he said, urging Christians to be more discerning when it comes to financial matters in the church.

The conversation turned to the broader issue of manipulation in the modern church, with Rev. Damina warning that the exploitation of believers is not just a theological problem but a financial one as well. “It’s a cycle that feeds itself,” he remarked.

“Pastors preach these false doctrines because they are financially invested in them. But the true gospel of Jesus Christ calls us to break free from these chains, to be vigilant, and not let these practices determine our spiritual lives.”
