Rob and Michele Reiner ‘tried everything’ to help son Nick before fatal attack

Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 70, were found stabbed to death Sunday, Dec. 14, at their Brentwood, Los Angeles home, authorities confirmed.

Their son Nick, 32, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail. At press time, he had not been charged or entered a plea.

The couple’s daughter, Romy, 28, discovered the bodies. Paramedics arrived around 3:30 p.m., describing the scene as a “Hollywood horror-scene nightmare,” according to sources familiar with the investigation.

Authorities have not confirmed a motive, but insiders say Rob and Nick reportedly had a heated argument the night before at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party, where Nick’s behavior alarmed attendees.

Rob Reiner was a director and actor best known for classics such as The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, and the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap.

He won two Emmys for his role as Michael Stivic on All in the Family and later transitioned to directing, earning acclaim throughout the ’80s and ’90s.

Michele, a photographer turned producer, collaborated with Rob on several projects, including Shock and Awe (2017) and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (2025).

The couple had publicly faced challenges with their son Nick, whose struggles with addiction began in his early teens.

He cycled through more than 18 rehab programs and sometimes lived on the streets. In 2016, the Reiners co-wrote Being Charlie, a film inspired by Nick’s experiences with substance abuse. At the time, both father and son described how making the film helped them reconnect.

Despite years of therapy, candid conversations, and family efforts to support him, Nick’s struggles continued.

He later admitted to destructive behavior, including damaging his parents’ guest house in 2017 while under the influence of drugs.

Friends and insiders have described the family as “tight-knit” but unable to find long-term stability with Nick.
