Roy Ayers, jazz-funk pioneer, passes away at 84
The world of music has lost a legend. Roy Ayers, the vibraphonist and jazz-funk icon whose influence stretched across generations, has passed away at the age of 84.
Best known for his timeless classic “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” Ayers’ groundbreaking sound helped shape jazz, funk, and neo-soul, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
Born on September 10, 1940, in Los Angeles, Ayers grew up surrounded by music. His early exposure to jazz led him to master the vibraphone, and by the 1960s, he had become a force in the jazz scene.
His transition into jazz-funk in the 1970s, blending groove-heavy rhythms with soulful melodies, positioned him as a pioneer of a genre that would influence artists for decades.
Ayers’ music became the blueprint for hip-hop and R&B, with countless artists—including Mary J. Blige, Common, Erykah Badu, Tyler, the Creator, and Pharrell Williams—sampling his work. His impact wasn’t just in the sounds he created but in the artists he inspired, earning him the title “Godfather of Neo-Soul.”
Beyond his music, Ayers was a cultural figure whose compositions found their way into films, commercials, and global performances.
Whether on “Soul Train,” NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, or stages worldwide, he remained a dynamic presence in music until his final days.

His passing marks the end of an era, but his sound lives on—reverberating through generations of musicians who continue to draw inspiration from his genius.
Roy Ayers is survived by his wife, Argerie, and their children, Mtume and Ayana Ayers. A celebration of his life is expected to be announced soon.
