There’s no rivalry between me and Akrobeto, he’s like family to me- Agya Koo
In an exclusive interview on Lawson Radio, Kumawood veteran Agya Koo born Kofi Adu shed light on his close relationship with his alleged rival, Akrobeto, revealing a deep bond that goes back to their humble beginnings in the entertainment industry.
The two actors, known for their roles in Ghanaian comedy and drama, have been inseparable since their early days in the iconic Keysoap Concert Party, an era that brought many talented performers into the limelight.
Agya Koo, who is often regarded as one of the most successful figures in Kumawood, shared fond memories of his time with Akrobeto. “We were like brothers,” Agya Koo said, reminiscing about their time together on and off stage. “Back then, we were so close that we would wear the same clothes and travel together to our performances. After every show at the National Theatre, we would walk home together, talking about everything.”
Reflecting on their contrasting career paths, Agya Koo noted that while Akrobeto sought better opportunities abroad, he remained in Ghana and found success in the film industry. This success allowed him to make significant strides in his personal life, including buying two cars and purchasing land to build his own home.
“I remember those days very well. Things were tough, but I knew that with determination, we would make it,” Agya Koo shared, speaking with a sense of pride. “When I bought my cars and built my house, it felt like everything was coming together.”
The two actors, however, found their paths crossing again when Agya Koo traveled to Holland for a performance alongside popular musician Kaakyire Kwame Appiah. At the time, Akrobeto was living in Belgium, but Agya Koo’s invitation to join the show marked a pivotal moment in their friendship.
“He was living in Belgium, but when I was performing in Holland, I called him to join us,” Agya Koo explained. “Having Akrobeto there brought a special energy to the event. It was like old times, and it reminded me of how much he had to offer.”
It was during this time that Agya Koo took the opportunity to encourage Akrobeto to return to Ghana and continue pursuing his acting career. “I told him, ‘This is your passion. Come back to Ghana, the industry is here, and you can make a real difference.’” Agya Koo added, “He listened, and when he came back, we worked together on a movie that became a huge hit.”
That movie not only marked a significant turning point in Akrobeto’s career but also enabled him to make important life changes. “The success of that film allowed Akrobeto to buy a house and a car,” Agya Koo said, reflecting on the positive impact it had on his friend’s life. “It was amazing to see how far he had come, and I was proud to have played a part in his journey.”
Agya Koo’s heartfelt words emphasize the bond of brotherhood and support that has defined his relationship with Akrobeto. Despite rumors of rivalry in the public eye, it’s clear that the two actors share a deep respect for each other, grounded in their shared history and experiences.
“I have no issues with Akrobeto,” Agya Koo concluded, dispelling any rumors of tension between the two. “We have been through a lot together, and I will always consider him my brother.”
