They said I snatched my husband, but it was all lies – Veekee James
Fashion entrepreneur Veekee James has opened up about the difficult period she faced following her marriage to Femi Atere, revealing that false accusations and social media backlash nearly drove her into depression.
Speaking on the Nancy Isime Show, James recalled how damaging the online rumours became shortly after she got married.
“There was one that really shook me. That was the period we had to ask God to help us come out of it. And immediately we came out of that, that was the end,” she said.
The designer explained that one of the most hurtful claims was that she had “snatched” her husband from a friend. “I think it was a story of how I stole him from a friend.
And we were sleeping with each other. And so many of them are lies. It almost put me in depression. For the first time in my life, I got to understand what people who face depression feel,” James admitted.
She described isolating herself as the situation took a toll on her mental health. “I remember entering my room, and I did not come out for like two days.
“I was there crying and praying. And I told God, you know the stories. If you know that what they are saying is all lies, help us get through this without it ruining my brand,” she shared.
According to her, faith played a crucial role in helping her overcome the ordeal.
“I remember waiting on God for days. And the way he brought me out was like a miracle.
“I have heard different stories, and it was just so easy for me to laugh about it. I remember my brother advising that I should not read comments, but I read them to know why I am trending. To know which places I am doing too much,” she said.
James, who married Atere in October 2023 before celebrating their union with elaborate traditional and white weddings in Akwa Ibom and Lagos in 2024, also spoke about her outlook for the future.
“I ask God to help me and guide. To be honest, I do not plan to make a video with my kid where we are dancing and I am trying to hide them.
“I plan to have kids who would be role models in society,” she noted.
