We can transform galamsey into a legitimate economic sector
Prophet Emmanuel Akwasi Boakye, widely known as Prophet Ogyaba and the founder of Holiness of Christ Zion Ministry has urged the incoming administration under John Dramani Mahama to prioritize galamsey, a controversial but economically impactful practice in Ghana.
During an interview with Fiifi Praat on Kingdom FM, Prophet Ogyaba, who has a unique connection to both the Kumawood film industry and the mining sector, shared his thoughts on how galamsey could be a crucial tool in tackling unemployment and boosting the country’s economy.
Reflecting on his personal experience, Ogyaba stated, “Back in the day, when I was part of the galamsey business, I was able to support my extravagant lifestyle.
It was a period where the profits were significant, and for many, it served as the only viable means of survival.”
His remarks shed light on the undeniable financial incentives behind illegal mining, which has long been a source of livelihood for many in rural Ghana.
However, Ogyaba was quick to add that such activities should not continue unchecked.
“While galamsey can provide substantial economic opportunities, it’s crucial that it is properly regulated.
“We cannot allow our land to be destroyed, and our water bodies polluted, simply for the sake of short-term gains,” he warned.
His appeal was a call for a balanced approach—one that could tap into the potential economic benefits while preventing the environmental damage that often accompanies these mining operations.
During the interview, Ogyaba urged the incoming government to implement comprehensive regulations that would not only address the economic benefits of galamsey but also ensure that sustainable practices are put in place to protect the environment.
“I understand the need for profit, but the health of our land, our people, and our future generations must be equally prioritized,” he stated firmly.
