When you have nobody except God, you stay focused – Helen Paul
Nigerian comedian and actress, Helen Paul, has shared profound insights about her journey through life, underscoring the role of God and self-determination in her success story.
Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast with Nedu Wazobia monitored by MyNewsGh, she opened up about her resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges.
“I got nobody except God,” Helen stated firmly. “When you know that’s all you have, you stay focused.”
Helen recounted her early career struggles, particularly the obstacles she faced in securing opportunities despite her educational qualifications.
“I had finished school and done my Master’s, but there were still times I didn’t get jobs. Some people just wanted to pull me down. They’d say, ‘Oh, she thinks she’s the only one.’ But one road doesn’t lead to the market.”
Her ability to pivot became a survival skill. “When they stopped me from being a voiceover artist, I switched to acting. When acting wasn’t working, I moved to skit-making.
“If that failed, I sold in markets. I even have public toilets I manage. You can stop me, but I’ll keep switching.”
Helen also shared an incident that tested her resolve during her time at a media house. When denied the opportunity to attend a sponsored training program, she financed her participation independently.
