Women have to work four times harder than men

Afropop singer Wendy Shay has opened up about the unique challenges faced by women in the music industry, describing how she often has to “work four times harder” than men to stay at the top of her game.

She explained that gender expectations and biological differences make the music journey more demanding for women.

“Being a woman in this industry is not easy. Sometimes our biology wants to pull us back,” she said in an interview with GHOne TV monitored by MyNewsGh.

“You might be dealing with your cycle, your emotions, or fatigue, but you still have to move through and work five times harder than a man.”

Wendy Shay added that despite societal progress, female artists are still expected to constantly prove their competence.

“In this part of the world, women haven’t always been seen as leaders. Even though the narrative is changing, we still have to prove that we can lead and be accountable,” she said.

She admitted that it can be emotionally draining to keep proving her worth but believes resilience is key.

“Our bodies are designed differently. Naturally, we are emotional beings. But you have to build yourself up and face the storm no matter what,” she added.

The singer, who also has a background in nursing, encouraged women in entertainment to prioritize mental strength and perseverance.

“You need to be emotionally and mentally ready for the journey. Once you are, nothing can stop you,” she said.
