Yaw Sarpong’s children respond to calls for joint burial with Madam Tiwaa

The children of late gospel legend Yaw Sarpong have responded to growing public calls for their father to be buried on the same day as his longtime associate, Tiwaa, following suggestions that both icons deserve a state-assisted joint funeral.

In recent days, sections of the Ghanaian public have proposed that since the two musicians journeyed together in ministry and music for decades, it would be symbolic and fitting for them to be laid to rest on the same day. Many have described them as national assets whose impact on gospel music and spiritual life in Ghana warrants a coordinated and dignified farewell.

Reacting to the proposal on Angel FM, Kumasi, the children of Yaw Sarpong acknowledged the emotional weight of the request and the deep affection Ghanaians hold for both figures.

“We have been notified that there is a call by Ghanaians that they are all national assets and that since they journeyed together, the government should give them a state-assisted burial so their funeral will be done together,” the sons noted.

However, they were careful to emphasise that such a decision cannot be taken lightly or unilaterally.

“We the children cannot solely make such a decision,” they explained. “We have left that decision in the hands of the family.”

The children indicated that discussions are ongoing within the extended family, adding that they are open to what would ultimately honour their father’s memory and legacy.

“We think this is a good call,” they admitted, while expressing hope that whatever conclusion is reached will ensure that their father rests in peace.

They also emphasised on the relationship between the two gospel figures, clarifying that they were good friends.

“We all had a good relationship with Madam Tiwaa,” they stated, reinforcing the bond that existed between the families.
