Yaw Sarpong’s secretary recounts a miracle on the Achimota highway
A devoted secretary to the late gospel icon Yaw Sarpong has shared an emotional account of what he describes as a miraculous encounter on the Achimota Highway, an incident he says perfectly captures the humility and grace that defined the celebrated musician’s life.
Speaking on Angel FM in Kumasi, Yaw Boakye, who served as Sarpong’s secretary for nearly five decades, reflected on his long journey with the gospel legend.
“My name is Yaw Boakye. I started working with Yaw Sarpong in 1977. I was with him until he died. If this year had ended, I would have worked with him for 50 years,” he recounted.
According to Boakye, his late employer was not just a musician but a deeply humble and generous soul whose life left a permanent imprint on everyone he encountered.
“Yaw Sarpong was a very good and humble man. People loved him. Walking with him was amazing. He never spoke against anyone. He loved to give. He showed love through giving to all the people around him and even those outside,” he said.
He then narrated the dramatic incident that nearly turned tragic.
“On the Achimota Highway, his brake failed him and it almost caused an serious accident,” Boakye recalled. “The other driver came out to confront him. I was even thinking it might result in a fight.”
But what happened next stunned us.
“As soon as the other driver saw that it was Yaw Sarpong, he calmed down and asked him what had happened,” he said. “Yaw explained that his brakes had failed.”
Instead of anger, the driver responded with gratitude.
“The man kept saying that Yaw had been a blessing to him,” Boakye revealed. “He went into his car and came out with 25 million old Ghana cedis to help repair the brakes.”
The encounter did not end there.
“The driver told us that his wife had always wanted to meet Yaw Sarpong,” Boakye continued. “He gave us his complimentary card, and later we visited their home.”
According to him, the welcome they received was overwhelming.
“The wife became so excited when she saw Yaw. She gave him 50 million old Ghana cedis, and the husband also added 100 million old Ghana cedis.”
For Boakye, the episode was not about money but about the extraordinary goodwill Sarpong inspired.
“People loved him. He was humble,” he emphasised.
