2020/2021 MTN FA Cup Wrap; Legon Cities shocked, Kotoko, Ashgold, Hearts, & Medeama through to last 8
The Round of 16 of the MTN FA Cup brought up some thrills and surprises as always expected with cup competitions as 7 teams managed to book their place in the Quarter-Final stages of the competition.
Premier League side, Legon Cities, were given the shock of their lives as they were knocked out by Division Two side Attram De Visser.
The Royals who played as hosts took an early through in-form attacker Jonah Attuquaye before being pecked back late on following some poor goalkeeping from Sylvester Sackey.
Both teams had to be separated via the lottery and Jonah Attuquaye turned from hero to villain as he missed the decisive spot-kick which led to the Royals’ elimination.
Accra Lion’s fairy tale run in the FA Cup came to an end as they fell short of Premier League Leaders Hearts of Oak. The much-changed Phobian team still had enough mettle and were too strong for the lower-tier side as inform Daniel Barnieh scored the only goal to send them through to the next stage.
Asante Kotoko kept their hopes of winning a trophy this season alive after they beat city rivals Asokwa Deportivo by 2-1 to progress to the last 8 of the competition.
Medeama progressed to the quarterfinal of the MTN FA Cup after edging out premier league compatriots Great Olympics on penalties after both sides were level after 90 minutes.
Elmina Sharks also avoided a scare and managed to navigate their way past Division 1 side Tema Youth to progress to the next stage of the competition.
Sharks fell behind to Stephen Asare’s opener but levelled through Geoffrey Acheampong. Sharks then won the penalty shoot-outs 3-2 to send Tema Youth packing out of the competition.
Ashgold eased to the last 8 of the MTN FA Cup thumping fellow premier league side Aduana Stars by 4-2 in Dormaa.
A brace from Mark Agyekum as well goals from David Abagna and Gordon Brokelyn were enough to see the miners through despite consolation goals from Richard Nathan and Emmanuel Osei Baffour.
In the only battle between the lower-tier sides, Kintampo Top Talents came out tops as they beat Tamale City 3-2 to continue their fairy tale run in the competition.
The last quarter-final will be decided later today when Berekum Chelsea face-off with Kintampo FC.
Teams who have qualified for Quarter-Finals:
Asante Kotoko
Hearts of Oak
Medeama
Ashanti Gold
Attram De Visser
Elmina Sharks
