2020/21 Women’s Premier League round up

The Women’s Premier League came to an end over the weekend with interesting results to climax the 2020/2021 season.

The Northern Zone was lit with Kumasi Sports Academy ending the season on a high by piping Pearl Pia Ladies 1-0 at Okese Park, Ejisu. The Academy Ladies came across as the most determined side while Pearl Pia Ladies appeared to play from deep to frustrate the home team.

A Constance Achiaa strike in the 46th minute sealed victory and also cemented the second position for Kumasi Sports Academy, leaving Pearl Pia ladies empty handed after the 90^th minute whistle – as they ended the season in a disappointing 7^th place with 11 points.

Ashtown Ladies were in devastating form following a 4-1 victory over city rivals Supreme Ladies

Fidous Yakubu netted twice, Blessing Asubia and Grace Acheampong added two goals for Ashtown Ladies before Sandra Owusu Ansah got the consolation for Supreme Ladies. Ashtown Ladies finished 3^rd in the zone with 23 points while Supreme Ladies amassed 12 points to end the campaign in 6^th place.

Northern Ladies ended the season with a stalemate at home to leaders, Ampem Darkoa Ladies.  The visitors opened the scores through Priscilla Okyere but the home side responded with three quick goals from Jafar Rahama (brace) and Yakubu Adamu.

Lead striker, Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah reduced the deficit in the second half to ensure her side ended the season without defeat.  The result means Ampem Darkoa finished as table toppers in the Northern Zone with 34 points while Northern Ladies finished 4^th with 19 Points.

Match day 14 saw Prisons ladies suffer a slim 1-0 defeat to fabulous ladies in their last game of the season. Prisons ladies, have been uninspiring throughout the season, particularly at the Sunyani  Coronation park however, Fabulous ladies, who have been very poor throughout the season had the urge this time beating the Sunyani to finish the season a positive note. Prisons Ladies thus end the season in 5^th with 16 points while Fabulous Ladies finished in 8^th place with 10 points.

Elsewhere in the southern zone, Soccer Intellectuals climaxed their season with a master class performance which saw them annihilate Immigration Service 4-0 at the Adu Yaw -Assasan Park, Ajumako.  It was a quick start for the ‘soccer masters’ as they recorded their first goal in less than a minute through Mary Awuah Boateng who added another goal inside 36 minutes. Regina Sam and Adina Akpo made it 4 before the stipulated 90 minute. Soccer Intellectuals had a tally of 25 points to end the season in third place – while Immigration Ladies came 7^th with 8 points.

Two goals from Suzzy Dede Teye and Martha Gifty Amissah were enough to hand Ladystrikers FC the maximum points to wrap up the 2020/21 Women’s Premier League (WPL).   Dede Teye drew first blood in the 51st minute with a screamer to put her side ahead.

Three minutes after the goal, Gifty Amissah headed home the “Strikers” second, to travel back with victory. Police Ladies came in stronger at some point in the second half after Coach Frank Sam introduced Juanita Aguadze, Henrietta Annie and Josephine Boateng but their efforts were not enough to snatch a point.

Ladystrikers thus end the season with a place in the top 4. The team thus ends the campaign at the 5^th position with 21 points.

Sea Lions held Tema-based Thunder Queens to a 2-2 draw at the Nduom Sports Stadium on Saturday. The ‘Butwekumma’ have toiled all season and getting a point from their last match is something to savor – but the draw dealt Thunder Queens a heavy blow as hopes of getting into the top four got shattered. Sea Lions finished bottom of the log with only 3 points – Thunder Queens came six.

For Berry Ladies, it was more of revenge against Hasaacas Ladies who had already won the Zone going into the final day of the season. They performed the guard of honor for Hasaacas Ladies ahead of kickoff – but that didn’t deter them from going after the three points. Grace Adams scored in the first half to give Berry Ladies a sweet revenge.  Hasaacas thus finished the season as zonal champions with 33 points. Berry Ladies were two points adrift as they came second with 31 points.

Hasaacas Ladies have won the title three times and could make it four with a win over Ampem Darkoa Ladies.
