AFCON 2021 Preview: Ghana vs São Tomé and Principe, Black Stars hoping to end campaign on a high
Ghana’s Black Stars will hope to wrap up their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in grand style when they host São Tomé and Principe at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The Stars booked qualification to the tournament-to be staged in Cameroon early next year due to Covid-19- with a game to spare following a 1-1 stalemate with South Africa in their last game.
A Kudus Mohammed strike in the second half was canceled out by Percy Tau who ensured the Bafana Bafana avoided defeat at home.
Despite getting the job done, Coach Akonnor’s side have been slated for an unconvincing performance and the former national captain now turned gaffer will want a massive improvement against the group’s whipping boys.
Sao Tome have struggled for form and results in the games played in so far, losing every one of the five matches played. The ‘Seleção dos Falcões e Papagaios’ have suffered defeats twice to both South Africa and Sudan while also losing their only encounter with Ghana until this Match.
The Black Stars will want to inflict another defeat on their opponents to also complete a double.
TEAM NEWS:
Ghana Coach Charles Akonnor has available three influential stars who missed the South Africa trip. The Ayew Brothers- Andre and Jordan alongside Thomas Partey are back in contention after missing the clash with the Bafana Bafana.
USM Alger bound striker Kwame Opoku had a debut to forget in the South Africa clash and will be yearning for another opportunity to make amends against the lowly Sao Tome.
It’s however unlikely that he would start but is likely to get some minutes.
There will be other players pushing for their debuts.
Expect Coach Charles Akonnor to shuffle his pack with for this one but still select a very competitive side.
