Alhassan Wakaso suffers horrific injury in Olympiakos Nicosia win
Ghanaian midfielder, Alhassan Wakaso suffered a broken leg in start of life at new club Olympiakos Nicosia against AC Omonia in the Cypriot First Division on Sunday.
The 29-year-old started in his usual defensive midfield role alongside compatriot Kingsley Sarfo in the match-day 5 fixture at the GSP Stadium.
Wakaso however picked up an injury to his left leg just about the half-hour mark after a tackle from behind by Omonia’s Shehu Abdullahi, which left him stuck on the ground in distress and was stretchered off to the hospital for further treatment.
Shehu, the Nigerian full-back who was playing as a holding midfielder this time, was sent off for the tackle which led to the injury.
Olympiakos Nicosia went on to finish the game with a 1-0 win through a 54th-minute strike by winger Marios Pechlivanis.
“Get well soon to Wakaso, he broke his fibula,” Olympiakos Nicosia coach Giannis Petrakis confirmed after the match.
“We will support him. We can’t enjoy winning so much with this event,” he added.
He will take a scan today (Monday) to know the extent of the injury and how long he will be in the treatment room.
His consistent injuries led to him leaving Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes in the summer and joining Olympiakos Nicosia in a free-agent deal just last month.
