Andre Ayew’s Al Sadd eliminated from AFC Champions League group-stage for second season running

Despite the addition of Ghana international Andre Ayew, Qatari champions Al Sadd were eliminated from the AFC Champions League after a 3-1 loss to Uzbekistan’s Nasaf Qarshi on Saturday.

The win, courtesy of Akmal Mozgovoy’s brace, brought Ruzykul Berdyev’s side to within a point of Group E leaders Al Faisaly, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Jordan’s Al Wehdat.

Al Sadd’s departure will come as a major surprise to a team that has not lost in the Qatar Stars League in the last two seasons but has struggled to translate their home supremacy onto the European stage under both former manager Xavi and current manager Javi Gracia.

Al Sadd will play Al Faisaly in their next game on Wednesday 27th April 25, 2022, in their last game in Group E. Al Sadd is last in Group E with four points after five games.
