Former Premier League coach Chris Hughton has formally applied for the role of Black Stars coach following the departure of Otto Addo.
The 64-year-old former Republic of Ireland full-back with Ghanaian roots served as a technical advisor to Otto Addo and aims to be Ghana’s next head coach.
Otto Addo resigned on December 1 after Ghana were defeated 2-0 by Uruguay, eliminating the Black Stars from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
According to Ghana Football Association communications director Henry Asante Twum, they have received multiple applications for the vacant position.
“Maybe over 60 applications. The Black Stars is very attractive. You cannot have Mohammed Kudus in your team and think the Black Stars are not attractive. It is an attractive brand, no doubt about that,” said Twum on Asempa FM.
“I’m never surprised that coaches are constantly applying. Most of them are from European countries and some too from South America.”
Hughton was heavily linked with the job after Milovan Rajevac was fired in the aftermath of Ghana’s first-round exit from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which took place in early 2022. He was later added to the technical team as a technical advisor and assisted Otto Addo in securing World Cup qualification with a win over Nigeria.
His position as a technical advisor was extended until the end of 2022. Hughton, born in London to a Ghanaian father and an Irish mother, has a wealth of experience in top-level football management.
Hughton has coached Newcastle United, Norwich City and Brighton, all in the Premier League, after starting his coaching career as a caretaker at Tottenham Hotspur in 1997. He once served as an assistant coach of the Republic of Ireland.
As a former footballer, Hughton represented the Republic of Ireland. He made 53 appearances and scored one goal.
