CK Akonnor did not get enough support - Sam Johnson

Former Ghana International Sam Johnson has disclosed Ex-Black Stars Coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor did not get enough support in order to succeed as Black Stars Coach.

CK Akonnor was appointed as Black Stars Coach in January 2020 and oversaw ten (10) games whilst at the helm of the Black Stars guiding the team to qualify for the 2021 African Cup of Nations.

Performances however under CK Akonnor were uninspiring leading to his sack. Sam Johnson who played with Akonnor at four African Cup of Nations tournaments however believes CK Akonnor wasn’t supported with enough technical men in order to help him succeed.

“In Europe and other National teams, we have about five or six people watching the games and monitoring other aspects of the game. The Coach cannot see everything at the same time on the field” – Sam Johnson told Empire FM.

“But here [Ghana], it is only the Coach and Assistants. It’s not done like that. This is the National team. People need to be around to help him” – Sam Johnson added while speaking with Empire FM.

CK Akonnor managed a 40% win rate while in charge of the Black Stars. The GFA is expected to announce a new Coach for the Black Stars in the next 48 hours ahead of next month’s World Cup Qualifiers.
