Ex-South Africa striker Sibusiso Zuma entreats Hugo Broos to work on condition of players despite Ghana win
Former South Africa striker Sibusiso Zuma has entreated coach Hugo Broos to work on the condition of players despite beating Ghana in the World Cup qualifiers.
The Bafana Bafana inflicted a 1-0 win over the Black Stars at the FnB Stadium in Johannesburg to go top of Group G last Monday.
Maritzburg United forward Bongokuhle Hlongwane strike in the dying embers of the game settled the encounter.
Zuma, who featured for the national team between 1998 and 2008 was full of praise for the players after their win against the Black Stars but said their condition must be worked on.
“South African players are just full of surprises, they will give you a performance like against Ghana. The only problem is the conditioning. Here at home, we don’t focus that much on conditioning. You can see during games if we play international teams, we tend to struggle.
“Especially the second half or towards the end of the games. That falls under the coaches, it’s a sign that the conditioning needs to be taken seriously as well. Players need to be fit. These boys need to understand they are here to work.
“But then again it makes me happy to see guys like Benni (McCarthy) and assistants like Nomvethe (Siyabonga) coaching because the boys will be able to talk to them.
“We are still building, it’s still early. Let’s just be happy about the performance and not get too excited. This is the best of the best, World Cup qualifiers bring out the best.
“So, whoever is coming against us you know it’s going to be tough. So, let’s just be happy about the result and let the coach continue his work. He still has a lot to do.”
Zuma featured 67 times for the Bafana Bafana scoring 13 goals in the process.
