Favoritism in Black Stars call ups must stop – Ghana legend Wilberforce Mfum to GFA

Former Ghana star Wilberforce Mfum has told the Ghana Football Association to ensure players are invited to the Black Stars based on merit.

According to him, the Black Stars can be competitive with a local coach at the helm of affairs and also ensuring favoritism is omitted in the selection of players.

The West Africa powerhouse recorded their worse AFCON tournament and their first exit since 2006 after finishing bottom of Group C behind Morocco, Gabon and Comoros.

The four-time Africa Champions will now have to wait until 2023 in the search of a fifth AFCON title.

In an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM, he said, “It is about time Sports journalists come together and tell football people the truth. The FA need to stop the favoritism when selecting players for the national team”

“Again, we must depend on our own black people because they are capable of managing our own affairs. In fact, we need a local coach to lead the Black Stars”

Wilberforce Mfum was a member of the Black Stars squad that won the 1963 Africa Cup of Nations.
