Former Black Stars striker Kwesi Appiah gives reason for Ghana’s abysmal AFCON campaign

Ghanaian forward Kwesi Appiah has explained why the Black Stars struggled at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Black Stars recorded their worse performance at the AFCON and their first exit in the group stage since 2006 after defeat to Comoros on Tuesday.

Appiah had high hopes in the four times African champions, but was left embarrassed after debutants Comoros beat Ghana 3-2 to end the West Africans tournament at the group stage.

According to him, the attackers of the team weren’t aggressive enough, hence the Black Stars poor showing at the AFCON.

Reacting to the debacle, the Crawly Town marksman said, “The early exit from the Afcon is devastating for us all. We had high hopes for the tournament and to not even make it out the group is disappointing,”

“It’s hard to say what went wrong but from watching the three games, our attacking intent wasn’t aggressive enough. We didn’t seem to have that cutting edge to put teams under consistent pressure,” he told SWG.

Kwesi Appiah was a member of the Black Stars team that reached the final of the tournament in 2015.
