Ghanaian youngster Edmund Addo prominent in FC Sheriff  win over Red Star Belgrade in Champions League qualification match

There was a great amount of joy in the City of Tiraspol when Moldova club FC Sheriff, book their place in the play-off of the UEFA Champions League after beating Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade by a lone goal at home in the second leg.

Ghanaian midfielder, Edmund Addo, was in action for the home side in his fourth consecutive start of the season since making his move from FK Senica last month.

Addo was a busy presence in the middle of the park alongside teammate Sebastien Thill as the two pivot in a 4-2-3-1 system.

The opening exchanges saw both sides attack with verve, but as many as five players were cautioned with a yellow card in the first 30 minutes. Four from the home side and one from the visitors.

That notwithstanding, there was a tidy performance from Edmund Addo who left it all on the field without putting a foot wrong. He timed his tackles, contested for the ball, and provided quality passes into attack.

Defender Danilo Arboleda gave FC Sheriff the only goal of the game in additional time after the first 45mins when he outjumped his opponents to meet the cross of Frank Castaneda to crush home the lead.

Red Star Belgrade were profligate in front as they wasted numerous scoring opportunities. Sheriff held on to qualified on a 2-1 aggregate after a spirited 1-1 performance in the first leg in Belgrade.

The Moldova club will meet either Poland giant Legia Warszawa or Dinamo Zagreb from Croatia for a place in the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League group stages.
