Henry Nwosu backs interim-Nigeria coach Eguavoen to edge out Ghana in 2022 FIFA WC qualifiers

Former Nigerian midfielder, Henry Nwosu has backed interim-Nigeria gaffer Austin Eguavoen to edge out Ghana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Super Eagles will renew their 71-year-old rivalry with their West African neighbours when both battle for a single ticket to the global showpiece.

This upcoming encounter is one that will be keenly watched by football fans in Accra and Abuja because of the known rivalry between the two countries.

“I have never doubted Eguavoen’s technical and tactical know-how in the round leather game. I really think he has done a good job with the team despite their ouster from the AFCON tournament,” Nwosu, a former member of the Green Eagles that won 1980 AFCON told Completesports.com.

“It is in this regard I believe he has what it takes to overcome the Black Stars of Ghana for a slot in the 2022 World Cup playoff.”

Nigeria were stunned by Tunisia in the last 16 at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon while the Black Stars of Ghana were kicked out of the tournament with one point and placed last in Group C.

The Super Eagles are seeking to qualify for the global showpiece a 7th time and, since 1994, have missed only one of seven editions. The last of three appearances by Ghana was in 2014.

Ghana will host the first leg with the reverse encounter in Nigeria, both to hold between 24th – 29th March.
