I rejected Kotoko and Hearts to play for Liberty because I wanted a quick move to Europe – Alfred Nii Larbi
Former Accra Hearts of Oak striker, Alfred Nii Larbi Darko has recounted how he intended to play for Liberty Professionals to get a quick contract in Europe.
In an interview with Ohene Brenya Bampoe on Happy 98.9FM, he intimated that he rejected Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko to play for the Scientific soccer lads because of how the late Alhaji Ibrahim Sly Tetteh was transferring players like Micheal Essien, Sulley Muntari and other players to Europe.
After not being able to make his dream move to Liberty, he made a decision to join Hearts of Oak where he won the league title, FA Cup and a continental title in 2005 before he stop playing for Hearts and left for the USA in 2007.
The ex Okwahu United striker also voiced that he had the confidence to fit into the phobians team because most of the players who won the premier league were left with about 6-7 players in the team.
“From the beginning, it was a little bit rough because Hearts is a big team and you need a big heart to play. If you don’t deliver, the supporters will start shouting and fighting you but we went through all these and stood on our grounds and we overcame it.
“And before I left they wanted to extend my contract to 3-years but I told them I have to travel to the state and change my career,” he said.
