Match Report: Medeama 2-1 Legon Cities, Medeama claim hard-fought win to boost title chances
Medeama SC’s quest to win a first premier league title is well on course following a hard fought home win against Legon Cities on Sunday.
A late goal by Kwasi Donsu ensured victory for the Mauves and Yellow who now close the gap on top spot.
Medeama SC welcomed relegation battling Legon Cities to the Akoon Park for this Match Week 20 fixture. The home side went into the game searching for their 7th consecutive home win.
They were without their attacking talisman in Amed Toure for this match, but his replacement, Prince Opoku Agyemang made sure he wasn’t missed. The Prince of Goals, as the Medeama faithful call him, needed only 23 minutes to open the scoring to give his side the lead.
The game’s beauty and excitement was however marred in the closing stages of the first half when Legon Cities defender Joseph Adjei was shown a red card for a potential leg-breaker tackle on Medeama’s Justice Blay.
As Adjei received his marching Blay was also subbed off so he could receive the needed treatment.
Back from recess, Legon Cities showed they won’t be deterred in pushing for an equalizer despite the numerical disadvantage.
They got what they were looking for too when Isaaka Mohammed equalized with 10 minutes of normal time left.
However, Medeama struck again this time Kwasi Donsu netting the second for his side.
Donsu’s second goal was enough to hand the home side a crucial win, which moves them to third on the table. Medeama SC, on 33 points now trail league leaders, Asante Kotoko by just 2 points.
Legon Cities will return to Accra much disappointed in failing to pick something from the game. The defeat means they’re still stuck on 22 points and lie 15th on the table.
