Michael Essien holds record for most Ballon D’or nominations by a Ghanaian
Former Black Stars midfielder, Michael Essien, holds the record for most Ballon D’or nominations with three according to Ghanaian journalist Owuraku Ampofo.
The Ballon D’or is a prestigious award given to the best player in the world by France Football. In the history of the awards, only one African has won it; George Weah.
Some Ghanaians like Asamoah Gyan and Abedi Pele have earned nominations for the award but Essien has earned the most (3) with his highest rank being 22nd.

Essien is currently an assistant coach at Danish side FC Nordsjaelland.
