OPINION: Hearts’ player contract extension controversies, one too many

Oh Hearts!!! Not again! Ahbah!

When I read this news this morning, I was devastated, completely shuttered, totally flummoxed and flabbergasted! How?

👇. 👇. 👇. 👇

Hearts of Oak & Heritage Soccer Agency Ltd mutually agree to terminate the contract of Ademola Kuti🇳🇬.

The Phobians have agreed to pay a total amount of $6.5K in installments.

First to hit the player’s account is $4K & the rest of $2.5K in May, 2021.

My concern
This is a player who never played for Hearts, yet he’s walking away with this money. Yet, in-form players are unwilling to renew their contracts because the club isn’t ready to meet their demands.

Ademola is getting this money for free. Yes freeeeeee. Meanwhile, the club’s most-priced asset now, Afutu’s future is lingering because of his contract renewal issues.

Why does this keep recurring?
Sabahn Laryea, Eric Kumi, Kizito, Tawiah, Atinga, …and quite recently Esso. All these players had to leave the club amid contract renewal controversies. It is not normal that these things must keep happening.

In all these, there is one thing that shows its head anytime such player contract extension cases come up.

Some people keep saying that before the player joined the club, he was a no body and so when it is time for the club to renew his contract, the player must just accept anything because the club has made him somebody. Yes! No two ways about that. But will the club be what it is without the players?

In saying that, what they fail to note is that the moment the player joins Hearts, his value goes up and the more years he plays for the club, his value keeps going up. And up up it goes when the player keeps playing regularly.

Placing emphasis on Afutu, he is currently the only Hearts player who, in my opinion, is ready to be in the Black Stars based on his performance and this automatically raises his demands. Don’t forget he’s been a key member of the Black Stars B since Maxwell Konadu’s era as head coach of the team.

Singularly, I think Hearts have no plan for Afutu. Yes, they have no plan for him. If Hearts had a plan for the player who is just 24 years, paying him what he’s demanding for as monthly salary wouldn’t be an issue.

Pay him that amount, extend his contract, consciously put in strategies to market him, get his video highlights, get clubs to watch him, get agents to follow him and trust me, Hearts can make more money from Afutu.

But because there is no plan for the boy, the club does not see the need to pay the player what’s he’s demanding for, which IMO is a fair demand.

This must not be repeating! No!
It’s becoming way too many with the same club!

Togbe deserves better! He keeps spending but gets nothing in return. In any serious club, the contract of a top player doesn’t get to even a year before a renewal is sparked. Why must a club wait until the player’s contract expires before starting to negotiate.

Togbe deserves better! Ah!
