South Africa coach Hugo Broos hails Bafana clean sheet in World Cup qualifiers

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has highlighted the importance of keeping clean sheets in the quest to qualify for the 2022 World Cup to be held in Qatar.

The Bafana Bafana are yet to concede a goal in the World Cup qualifiers after keeping a clean sheet in their first two games.

They have kept clean sheets against Zimbabwe and Ghana as they top Group G with 4 points.

In an interview, the Belgian trainer highlighted the importance of not conceding while hailing his side’s disciplined defensive display against Ghana last Monday.

“Keeping a clean sheet is very important because if you keep a clean sheet, you already have one point”

“But that doesn’t mean you have to play defensively,” said Broos after Bafana’s 1-0 win over Ghana at FNB Stadium on Monday.

“We showed good organization and discipline, which is very important like we showed today.

“We did it, also maybe to a lesser degree in Zimbabwe, but today we showed lots of discipline and didn’t lose the ball recklessly.

“So, that’s what we asked the players to do and then which is to have another clean sheet. So we scored the goal, which resulted in the win. So, it proves how important clean sheets are.

Bafana next faces a double-header against minnows Ethiopia in October as Broos’ side aim to move closer to qualification.
