Former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah, has humorously admitted that he lost 5 kilos while preparing to take the penalty kick in Ghana’s World Cup game against the United States of America in 2006.

Following a defeat at the hands of Italy in the first game of the 2006 World Cup and a historic win against the Czech Republic, the Black Stars were eager to secure another 3 points to ensure qualification to the next round of the competition.

Haminu Draman’s 22nd minute goal had given the debutants the lead in the first half, but it was cancelled out by Dempsey with just a few minutes to the break.

Appiah then had the opportunity to restore the Stars’ lead in the 45th minute and although it was a kick that he did convert, and ultimately provide the three points for the country, the player has now opened up about the pressure he felt prior to taking the penalty.

Speaking as a pundit on JoySports’ Euros 2020 coverage, Stephen Apppiah admitted the thought millions of Ghanaians expecting him to deliver was enough reason for him to lose 5 kilos.
