'The Hand of God now belongs to me' - Luis Suarez's comment after famous handball incident against Ghana in 2010

Uruguay star Luis Suarez has been at the centre of many controversies throughout his career with his handball incident against Ghana during the 2010 World Cup no exception.

Uruguay facing Ghana will be a repeat of the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals in South Africa.

The Black Stars exited the competition after losing to The Sky Blue through the penalty shootout.

Ghana were just a step closer to making history until that decisive penalty kick was missed by Asamoah Gyan at the Soccer City stadium.

Speaking after the game on that infamous handball incident he said:

“The Hand of God now belongs to me,” Suarez was quoted as saying at the time by the Guardian. “Mine is the real Hand Of God.

“I made the best save of the tournament. Sometimes in training I play as a goalkeeper so it was worth it. There was no alternative but for me to do that and when they missed the penalty I thought ‘It is a miracle and we are alive in the tournament’.

“Now we are in the semi-finals although I was very sad because no one likes to be sent off. The celebration afterwards was impressive, but very quiet because nobody gave us a chance but, with courage, we move forward.”

Ghana has been paired against Portugal, Uruguay and Korea Republic in Group H of the 2022 World Cup.
