Veteran Ghanaian Coach questions quality of current Black Stars
Experienced Ghanaian Coach Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong has raised serious concerns about the quality level of the current Black Stars team.
The performances of the Black Stars have been under serious scrutiny in recent times during the tenure of current gaffer Charles Akonnor. With results going southwards of expectations, questions have been asked about the capabilities of the current team with apparent cracks showing in the various departments of the side.
Most glaring of them is Ghana’s inability to score goals, a malaise the current technical team is grappled with.
With expectations of Ghana winning the Africa Cup of Nations tournament for the first time since 1982 at next year’s edition gradually fading, JE Sarpong has opined that we lack the needed quality to make such an impact.
He was speaking immediately after Ghana’s defeat to South Africa on Monday in a FIFA World Cup qualifier.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Coach Sarpong said “We don’t have quality in the Black Stars. We have names, but we don’t have a team.
“Currently we lack a solid foundation. After major competitions at Juvenile level we fail to progress the players through a programme to the senior level,” he added.
“When the players go abroad en masse, who monitors them. We have a very long way to go. If we don’t get serious with how we do our things, we will eventually see our national team sink lower.
“Currently we don’t even have a reservoir where we can replace our ageing stars with. We lack the quality,” Coach Sarpong concluded.
Ghana is now ranked second in the World Cup qualifying group behind South Africa. The position is subject to change depending in results from Ethiopia’s clash with Zimbabwe later on Tuesday.
