WCQ 2022: Hearts' Fatawu Mohammed in neck to neck with Philimon Baffour for a start against South Africa

Hearts of Oak defender Fatawu Mohammed and Dreams FC’s Philimon Baffour are knocking on the doors of CK Akonnor for a starting place in Monday’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa in Johannesburg.

CK Akonnor will have to take a decision on who will be given the nod to play at right back following the absence of Andy Yiadom who has been recalled by Championship side Reading.

Mohammed was handed a late call up due to the team due to the absence of Benson Annang.

The experience right back was a key member of the Hearts of Oak squad which won the league and cup double at the end of the season.

Baffour on the hand will be hoping to get the nod following his exploit for the Black Satellites in the U20 AFCON and for Dreams FC in the Ghana Premier League.

Ghana started the campaign with a narrow win over Ethiopia while South Africa were held to a goalless draw on the road against Zimbabwe.

The Black Stars will be without seven players who featured in last Friday’s encounter against Ethiopia.
