Vida Essel-LampteyThe British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) today, July 7, 2020, featured Ghana’s COVID-19 inspired print on its news website BBC News.
Under the headline “Ghanaian COVID-19 Inspired Fashion Wax-Print Designs Launched”, the story throws light on Ghana Textiles Printing Company’s new addition to its collection of fabrics.
The wax-print which hit the Ghanaian market some few days ago seems to have caught the eye of the international news site due to its interesting names relating to COVID-19.
The report on the news site was accompanied by four different designs of the “Lockdown” collection and one from the “Fellow Ghanaians” collection signifying the iconic spectacles the President wears during his lockdown address to the nation.
“The new fabrics have symbols like padlocks, keys, and planes to reflect some of the measures implemented to curb the spread of Coronavirus,” the BBC said.
“We are a business that tells stories and we tell our stories through our designs,” the Marketing Director of Tex Styles Ghana Limited, producers of the GTP prints, Rev. Stephen Kofi Badu, was reported to have told the BBC Focus on Africa Radio.
“We believe that it is going to leave a mark in the history of the world, and it’s important that generations that come after us get to know that once upon a time, such a phenomenon occurred,” he said.
Some of the new GTP designs have glasses on them, similar to the signature ones worn by Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has been giving regular updates on the virus, the report indicated.
“Another design shows a symbol of a plane, it indicates that during the lockdown, one of the measures that Ghana took was to close the borders, so no flights,” he added.
Ghana Textiles Printing Company (GTP) is a well known Ghanaian brand in many homes. Over the years, the company has created a distinctive identity for itself in the print textile industry.
