Milovan Rajevac returns to Ghana after a decade for second Black Stars stint

Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac has returned to Ghana for his second spell with the Black Stars after ten years.

The tenure of agreement is for a year, however, if he is able to qualify for the World Cup tournament in Qatar, the contract will be extended to 2023.

The 67-year-old was a coach for Ghana between 2008 and 2010 where he made history with the national team.

Rajevac, in his first reign as Ghana’s coach, was named African Coach of the Year in 2010 after impressive outings at the AFCON and World Cup respectively.

He led the Black Stars in 2010 to reach the quarter-finals at the World Cup in South Africa.

Few months earlier, he led Ghana through to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Angola in which they fell to Egypt.

In the World Cup, Ghana came quite close to becoming first African nation to make it to the semi-finals, when they missed a penalty in the last minute of the quarter-final match against Uruguay.

Asamoah Gyan’s strike hit the crossbar in what could have been the match-winner, forcing the game to an extra shoot-out in which the Black Stars ended as the losing side.

The Serbian gaffer returns to Ghana after a decade following his appointment as the new Black Stars coach after the sacking of Charles Kwabla Akonnor over an uninspiring performance.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian coaching duo of Otto Addo and Maxwell Konadu have been selected to deputize Milovan Rajevac.

Otto Addo, who is the assistant coach of German side Dortmund will work on part-time basis.

He has been tasked to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and also qualify the Black Stars to the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar.

Rajevac first assignment will be against Zimbabwe in the World Cup qualifiers at the Cape Coast Stadium next month.
