VIDEO: Speaker of Parliament resumes sitting in a kingly looks

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsley Bagbin on Tuesday, January 25, resumes his speakership duties in Ghana’s Parliament in a kingly look.

The house was sitting for the first time this year and also the first time in a month following the December 20, brawls which saw Members of the house through physical punches at each other.

The speaker in a video sighted by GhanaPlus.com departed from his usual suit and ties outfit and appeared dressed in a kingly outfit like a Royal Majesty from Ghana.

He was spotted adorned in the traditional Ashanti Kente, a white traditional shirt with it accompanying gold regalia.

Mr Bagbin explained his new look is to market Ghana and to set it apart from what was left it by its colonial masters, the British.

According to him, the dominant dress code of members in the national assembly of independent Ghana was traditional attire hence it is in order that Members of Parliament and he, the speaker attend to proceedings of the house in same.

“This is the Parliament of Ghana, it is a unique made in Ghana product and we must showcase and market it to the world as a brand,” he said.

“We must create a unique set of values and norms that will give a unique character to our parliament to set it apart from the colonial legacies of the British system”.

”My outfit today, as the speaker, the presiding officer is to set the motion for that agenda. The practice of MPs decently dressed in traditional attire, led by the Speaker is long overdue. Ghanaians accept representation of the people to include representation of the full identity of the Ghanaian that is their culture, tradition and more importantly their dress code,” Speaker Bagbin explained.
