The Minister of Information, Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has disclosed that the President’s impression of the immediate past, Special Prosecutor, Mr. Martin Amidu has not changed in any way despite his decision to indict the president in his letter of resignation submitted to the presidency and the public.
According to him, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo still holds him in very high esteem despite the development.
“I think first of all we must be quite clear that what we think of Mr. Amidu as a person and his commitment to this country as expressed by the President has not changed, it has not diminished in any way. We continued to hold Mr. Amidu in very high esteem”.
Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah was speaking in an interview with TV3’s Election360 programme on Wednesday, November 18, 2020.
He noted that the government’s wish on his appointment was for him to use his expertise to help in the country’s cause against corruption, a wish which would never materialize, especially, with his resignation, almost three years into his nine years mandate as the Special Prosecutor.
“It was our wish that he would be a strong pillar in the exercise of further fighting corruption”, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah added.
Nana Addo’s Impression of Martin Amidu
It could be recalled that the President in his speech at an induction ceremony to swear Mr. Amidu into office on February 23, 2018, praised the NDC politician for being a person of integrity, competence, and courage, a requisite for the Special Prosecutor’s office.
“I have done so because I am fully convinced that Mr. Martin Amidu, a prominent legal personality who held the high office of the Attorney General of the Republic in the government of the late President Prof John Evans Atta Mills has the requisite integrity incompetence, courage, and independence of character to discharge effectively responsibility of this new office”.
He recommended the anti-corruption crusader for single-handedly fighting the cause of the entire country in the case against businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome and Waterville Holdings Limited in which he retrieved a total of €47 million judgment debt paid illegally to the two entities.
