2022 World Cup: Group H described as "group of death"

The 2022 World Cup Group H  has been described by some as “group of death,” as opposed to Japan, which is allocated to a group with Spain and Germany and is rated as the “worst group formation.”

South Korea 29th in FIFA ranking was assigned to Group H in the 2022 Qatar World Cup draw ceremony held in Doha, Qatar on the 2nd, with Portugal ranked 8th, Uruguay ranked 13th, and Ghana ranked 60th.

It is a group assignment that tries to avoid the strong teams that were chosen as teams to avoid prior to the draw as much as possible. Group H, to which Korea belongs, ranks 27.5th on average in FIFA rankings by group, the lowest among the eight groups after Group A (31.8th), to which host country Qatar belongs.

Portugal, which was assigned to Port 1 in Group H, was unable to go directly to the finals in the European qualifications, and only made it to the World Cup by passing through the PO (play-off). Uruguay was also defeated 0-3 by Bolivia, while Ghana had the lowest FIFA rating among the teams who went to the finals.

As a result, the perspectives of international media and betting businesses differ. ESPN in the United States and Givemesports in the United Kingdom predicted that Korea would advance to the round of 16 as the group’s runner-up to Portugal.

Korea, on the other side, was placed last in Group H by Yahoo Sports in the United States. Korea’s odds of making it out of the group stage were likewise assessed as the lowest by certain betting organizations.
