90% – 94% of road accidents are caused by human error

The Western Regional Command of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) says Ninety per cent (90%) to Ninety-four per cent (94%) of road accidents are caused by human error.

Speaking on Skyy Power 93.5FM’s Jolly Breakfast Show (JBS) on Wednesday, April 13, Chief Superintendent Isaac Sorkpah, Regional MTTD Commander said unprofessionalism and incompetence on the side of drivers contribute highly to road crashes.

He indicated this is a major factor that causes road accidents in the country.

He said, “You should get a safety mentality when driving and using the road as a pedestrian. We have realised that most drivers are incompetent after they are being questioned when they get involved in an accident.”

“When we talk about incompetence, most drivers do not have a clear knowledge of the road traffic regulations, you should know what the rules of the roads say and adhere to the road signs on the road which most drivers don’t.“

Regional MTTD Commander also said a total of 734 persons lost their lives through road crashes between January and March 2022.

Out of the 734 persons, 31 persons were recorded to have died in the Western Region through road accidents.

A total of 177 crashes were reported from January to March 2022 in the Western Region, involving 310 vehicles of which 114 involved commercial vehicles, 110 private vehicles and 86 were motorcycles.

38 pedestrians were knocked down, 31 persons died and 139 persons sustained various degrees of injuries.

Also, the Western Region is reported to be the 9th region with the highest recorded death rate relating to road crashes in the country.
