The Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Abraham Amaliba has said that anybody who tries to protect the Electoral Commission(EC) from providing the documents they are requesting for has something to hide.
NDC demands original copies of Presidential election results documents
The NDC on Tuesday filed a motion at the Supreme Court to request from the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa to submit in just three days electoral documents use in the declaration of the 2020 Presidential elections results for inspection.
They were requesting in total six different documents namely originals of Constituency Presidential Election results collation forms (Form 9) Constituency Presidential Election results summary sheets (Form 10) Regional Presidential Election results Collation Forms (Form 11) and Regional President Election Results Summary Sheet (Form 12) and that also from all the 16 regions in Ghana.
Others were originals of the Declaration Presidential Results form (Form 13) and the records of the alleged updates of to the purported declaration of the presidential election results on 9th December 2020 of the results of four constituencies in the Greater Accra Region.
The apex court is expected to rule on the motion today before continuing with its scheduled proceedings.
Amaliba Speaks on new motion
Speaking on JoyNew’s AM Show on Wednesday, January 20, Mr Amaliba explained the motion was a harmless request and does not see in anyway how it would affect anybody if granted adding anyone who attempts to deny them the request had something to hide.
“Anybody who is disagreeing with this one too must be somebody who seems not interested in getting to the bottom of this matter. Anybody who is trying to protect EC from providing this documents which are public documents, which are state institution documents is hiding something,” he said.
“This is a harmless request, show me the originals of what you use to declare, how is it going to be ingenuous to anybody, or any institution, how is it going to be negative, how is it going to affect anybody accept there is something to hide,” he emphasized.
Significance of the motion
Mr Amaliba further explained that the inspection of the documents would bring to the attention of the court and Ghanaians who voted, how the EC reached the results they declared on December 9 and if it was without any interference.
He indicated Ghanaians would be the ultimate judges if their new request is denied by the court.
