Security guard of Chinese ‘illegal’ miner allegedly shoots 22-year-old Ghanaian to death – Skyy Power FM

Kwaku Etsi, a 22-year-old man, was allegedly shot dead at Hiawa, a hamlet in the Amenfi Central Constituency of the Western Region, by a security guard for Chinese illegal miners.

According to reports from the neighbourhood, the situation has led to a number of youth protests.

The deceased was shot dead, according to a resident who described the incident to Skyy Power FM, after he was observed at the Chinese miners’ premises in the early hours of June 29.

Although it is unclear what purpose the dead was serving on the Chinese miners’ property, it is believed that he was there to take their black sand, which contained unprocessed gold.

“They fired multiple shots at him. They first shot his leg, he was not dead and started begging for mercy but they went ahead to shoot his head, back and chest. He was quickly rushed to the clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival,”

After perpetrating the act, the suspect left the neighbourhood.

A few hours after the shooting, some irate young people from the neighbourhood protested the young man’s death on the streets.

They allegedly broke into every flat known to be occupied by Chinese illegal miners in the neighbourhood and demanded information about their colleague’s passing.

Additionally, it is said that they destroyed some of the Chinese nationals’ property.

One of the demonstrators claimed that although they are being sought out by the police, the Chinese illegal miners are being shielded from capture and allowed to carry on with their labour.

“We were only protesting the death of our friend. We needed answers on why he was shot when he had not stolen anything as they claim. The police have instead been arresting the protesters. Some of our colleagues have been arrested and the police are on manhunt for the rest of us. So most of us are fleeing the community as I speak because we are afraid they will come after us. The Chinese illegal miners are still working with their macho men whilst we are fleeing,” one of the protesters, Nana Amoa, indicated.

Some neighbourhood members claim that the actions of the Chinese illegal miners and their macho guys have repeatedly tormented them.

Ebenezer Obimpeh, an assemblyman from the neighbourhood, says things are currently under control.

He claims that after being paraded before the court, community members who were arrested received bail.

Since then, several calls and text messages to Mr Patrick H. Amponteng’s cell phone number, the chief executive of the Amenfi Central District, have gone unanswered.
