The reconstruction of the Appiatse community according to the project consultant is above 30% completion.

Speaking to Skyy News on Wednesday, January 4, during the Minister of Lands and Natural Resource visit to the community, Mr Walter Semordzi said they are currently constructing 106 housing units out of 124.

He said, “At the moment, we are above 30% completion and we expect that by June 6th we should complete the project and hand it over to the people.”

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Abu Jinapor speaking to Skyy News said they went through a laid down process to get this project where it is now hopefully and they will complete it and hand it over to the indigenes of Appiatse.

Also, an investigation was conducted and those who had to be punished were punished as it was a positive start to getting justice for the people of Appiatse.

He indicated that the Appiatse Fund is being put to judicious use and is calling on fellow Ghanaians to continue contributing since this is only phase one of the project and more money will be needed to construct other necessary facilities.

Background:

The January 20th explosion at Appiatse in the Prestea Huni-Valley claimed some 14 lives, injuring hundreds and displacing several others.

Conversations about the reconstruction of the town have become paramount, even as numerous relief items come in for the affected persons, they are currently being housed at temporary facilities at their make-shift camp.

As such calls for the redevelopment of the town as being one of the concerns of these persons.

The government has retreated from its commitment to securing the needed funds to embark on this project.

Even ahead of the government’s official sod-cutting, the PRO of the Apiatse relief committee, Thywill Quashie speaking to Skyy Headline news recounted how work has begun.

He said, “Housing units are expected to be constructed at the Appiatse committee ranging to single rooms to seven bedroom houses which work has started with a sod cutting ceremony… I can confidently say work has started with six contractors on site. They have prepared grounds and dug out the foundation.

He further appealed for the release of more support for the construction project.

“Whiles 124 housing units will be reconstructed in the Appiatse community, we will still want to appeal to donors to continue to support because they are still people who are bedridden and cannot do anything for themselves.” He added.
