Close Season set for July 1st – Skyy Power FM
The Fisheries Commission has put measures in place to begin the close season.
Speaking in an interview with the Regional Director of Fisheries in the Western Region, Mr Joseph Yeboah said the purpose of the exercise is to protect fishes that will soon sponge.
He stated that the close season would last for one month for the artisanal canoes and two months for the trolleys.
According to him, the close season for artisanal canoes will begin from 1st July to 31st July, and for the trolleys, it will begin from 1st Just to 31st August.
He further gave some interventions and measures the ministry has put in place to support the fishermen for the period by providing them with livelihood training such as soap making. The age range is from 18 years to 35 years, he added.
In an interview with the Deputy Fishery Director, Matilda Ajakameh, “We expect much from the fishermen. When the season is over, and the sea is opened, they should avoid using illegal methods in fishing, like dynamite fishing because we want to protect the baby fish”
She also enumerated some challenges the ministry is facing during the close season.
“Close season means, they shouldn’t fish but unfortunately, you still get some recalcitrant fishers who find some means to go and fish. Some go at dawn or night and this destroys the purpose of the close season”
